Stunning Image Captures Eruption of Fagradalsfjall Volcano

With approximately 30 active volcanic ranges, Iceland is no stranger to lava and ash. However, the eruption of Fagradalsfjall, stunningly captured here by photographer Olivier Grunewald, has been one of the most memorable in recent times.

In March 2021, the volcano became active again after more than 800 years of dormancy in the Reykjanes region, near the capital Reykjavík. This eruption turned out to be the longest-lasting one Iceland has experienced in 50 years. Unlike explosive eruptions, the eruption of Fagradalsfjall was characterized by a slow, effusive flow of lava, making the surrounding area relatively safe for the numerous visitors who wanted to witness it.

This breathtaking image, taken in June 2021, showcases Fagradalsfjall’s central crater filled with lava, creating a fiery lake of molten rock that cascades down its slopes. Grunewald, who has been photographing volcanic events for over 25 years, says, “Volcanoes fascinate me with their beauty, power, and the feeling of connecting with the forces that shaped our planet.”

Although it can be dangerous, Grunewald believes that having an observer to monitor potential risks and using protective equipment is enough to ensure safety.

Despite its relatively calm nature, Fagradalsfjall is not finished yet. It resumed its eruption in early August 2022 (although there has been no visible activity since later that month), and volcanologists predict that it will enter a cycle of eruptions that could continue for several more years.
