Pepper X: The Hottest Chilli on the Planet

– Pepper X is around 500 times hotter than a jalapeno.
– It measures a staggering 2.69 million Scoville heat units (SHU).
– Ed Currie, the breeder of the previous record-holder Carolina Reaper, is also behind Pepper X.
– Currie developed Pepper X after crossbreeding a brutally hot variety of chilli with the Carolina Reaper.
– It took Currie around a decade of experimentation to cultivate Pepper X in his South Carolina greenhouses.
– Currie ate a whole Pepper X and experienced intense heat and cramps.
– Capsaicin, the chemical irritant that makes peppers hot, binds to a receptor in nerve cells in mammals and triggers an inflammatory response.
– Too much spice can cause vomiting, stomach pain, and burning diarrhea, but drinking milk can help cool the heat.
– Currie plans to breed even hotter peppers in the future.
